Lucy Kemp-Welch students

18th October 2025 ->
During the existence of the Bushey School of Painting and later the Kemp-Welch School of Animal Painting no satisfactory records were kept. Bushey Museum and Art Gallery does have in the collection artworks by various artists, whom we know were Lucy Kemp-Welch students (thanks to the research by Grant Longman). The artists involved are various and practised in many different, styles, subjects and media.

Portraits of  Hubert von Herkomer

24th January 1926 – July 2026
Hubert von Herkomer became a very wealthy man and was able to make Bushey the centre of his school, build a Gothic mansion and for Bushey’s well-being, finance the village nurse, as well as being instrumental in arranging water and electrical supplies. His wealth – and hard work – came from his painting of portraits.
Herkomer portraits can be found in a great many County and Town Halls, Museums, Resource Centres, Colleges, Stately homes, Municipal Art Galleries, Academies, Archives, Libraries. Oxford University alone – according to Art UK – boasts at least 17, Cambridge University 7. This is apart from those portraits that are in private collections. Portraits in the Hebrides and Wells, Somerset; Wick in the north of Scotland and Bromley in Kent; Llandudno and Norwich. He was the most prolific portrait painter and it is Bushey Museum and Art Gallery’s intention to celebrate this in January. A number of the portraits are very big so help will be required in the mounting of the Exhibition – also we need as much publicity as possible nationally and internationally so please Friends spread the word.
